There were at least 2 murders and 1 attempted murder during the time I stayed at Morningside Inn, in New York City - when I went to Columbia University.

Additionally, a woman there was stabbed in the throat and a guy was thrown out of a 5th floor window on a Saturday night.
Drug use was rampant in the building also, and you definitely didn't want to make eye contact with anyone you saw consuming narcotics in that building. They would react unpredictably.

Manhattan: Man Sentenced for Murder
A man already behind bars for maiming an ex-girlfriend was sentenced yesterday in State Supreme Court to 25 years to life for killing her new boyfriend during the same attack by forcing him out a fifth-floor window in her Manhattan building. The man, Trevor Frederick, 29, of East Hampton, N.Y., was convicted on July 20 of killing Christopher Mariconi, 23, of Scotia, N.Y., by stabbing him and forcing him out the window on Nov. 7, 2003. The Manhattan district attorney charged that Mr. Frederick killed Mr. Mariconi after barging into the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, Jenae Aragosa, 24, and stabbing her before turning on Mr. Mariconi. Mr. Frederick had been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the stabbing and assault of Ms. Aragosa.
